Jagersfontein might be a small town, but there is no shortage of talent in the area. Karabo Mathapelo Legetla, a young author from Jagersfontein in the Free State, published her debut book last year in September and has never looked back. Her debut book, “The Picture,” proved that writing has always been close to her heart. From a young age, she loved creating stories and using words to express emotions, imagination, and the things that people sometimes struggle to say aloud. Becoming a published author was a dream she carried quietly, and seeing “The Picture” become a real book was one of the most meaningful moments in her life. “The Picture” is a love story inspired by Indila’s song, “Love Story.” The narrative follows a man who is deeply affected by the memory of someone he loved. At the center of the book is a photograph, an image that represents love, memory, and the feeling that some people remain with us even when they are no longer physically present. The book explores love, grief, memory, and the quiet connection between the past and present. Karabo aimed to create a story that feels emotional and poetic, allowing readers to reflect on the people and memories that remain important in their own lives. Although the story deals with loss, it is also a testament to the lasting power of love. “Publishing ‘The Picture’ taught me that a dream can begin in a small place and still reach beyond it. Being a young author from Jagersfontein has made this journey especially meaningful to me. I hope my work encourages other young people, especially those from small towns, to believe in their creativity and to take their gifts seriously.” She stated. Charmaine Mrwebi believed in my story and supported me throughout the journey of bringing “The Picture” to life. Her encouragement and belief made a small-town girl’s dream feel possible and, ultimately, made it a reality. A year after publishing her debut book, Karabo is grateful for the support she has received. “The Picture” is more than just a book to her; it is the beginning of her journey as an author. She looks forward to continuing to write, grow, and share more stories in the future. #BeTheFirstToKnow
