MEC Elzabe Rockman recently visited the Nthabiseng Luncheon Club and Bahloki Old Age Home as part of an Outreach Programme in Mamafubedu, Petrus Steyn. The visit aimed to connect with the senior citizens of the community, which Speaker of the District, Mme Phani, expressed gratitude for in her welcoming remarks.
She highlighted her previous request for MEC Rockman to engage with the elderly, noting that she felt the town had been overlooked by government initiatives.
During her keynote address, MEC Rockman acknowledged the importance of such outreach efforts. She emphasized the significant role that senior citizens play in society, stating, "They are the ones who teach the youth the righteous ways."
She also pointed out the critical issue of food security, mentioning that seniors often take on the responsibility of caring for households. "When programs like this are initiated, we must consider the provision of food," she concluded.
As part of the visit, members of the Nthabiseng Luncheon Club were presented with food parcels and groceries, with vegetables sourced from local farmers to support the community's agricultural sector. Me Tau, Chairperson of the Luncheon Club, expressed appreciation for the visit and the support, urging MEC Rockman to continue assisting other luncheon clubs in the area, as the elderly are in dire need of support.
The second stop of MEC Rockman's outreach was at Bahloki Old Age Home, where she noted the unique environment compared to the luncheon clubs. She emphasized the necessity of seeking wisdom from senior citizens to help restore order in communities.
In a heartwarming gesture, the residents of the Old Age Home gifted MEC Rockman with canned peaches as a token of appreciation. In return, she presented small gifts to the seniors and reiterated her commitment to addressing their needs in collaboration with local municipalities.
