The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF), a vital entity of the Department of Employment and Labour, recently hosted a media networking event in Harrismith, located in the Eastern Free State. The gathering aimed to showcase the UIF's successes and progress in the region.

Officials from the UIF in the Free State and local media representatives convened at the Mountain View Inn Hotel for a high-level discussion centered on the Unemployment Insurance Fund Labour Activation Programme (LAP), enhancements in service delivery, and ongoing regional economic development initiatives.

During the session, UIF officials shared significant operational milestones, announcing that over R450 million has been disbursed to unemployment beneficiaries across the Free State province. This funding encompasses various categories of beneficiaries.

A key focus of the funding includes the implementation of the KPSI system and payments under Section 17 of the Unemployment Insurance Act, specifically targeting formal unemployment claims to offer direct social protection to workers during employment transitions.

An oversight visit to Casrix (Pty) Ltd highlighted the collaboration between the UIF and the company, which has successfully hired more residents from Harrismith. This initiative has played a pivotal role in reducing unemployment and ensuring that more families have access to meals.

Casrix is recognized as one of Free State’s largest textile and clothing manufacturers, sustaining over 250 permanent employees for more than 20 years. The company specializes in producing acrylic knitted garments, corporate wear, and school uniforms, demonstrating how state interventions have preserved crucial manufacturing capabilities.

By streamlining claim processing and integrating youth skills initiatives under the Labour Activation Programme, the department aims to connect unemployment relief with sustainable job creation. The UIF and the Department of Labour continue their commitment to driving local job retention, promoting economic growth, and ensuring the preservation of as many jobs as possible.
