The film “18,” created by Virginia-based scriptwriter and filmmaker Pulane Moleko, premiered at the Andre Huguenet Theatre in Bloemfontein on November 28.
Shot entirely in Bloemfontein over the course of five days, the film features a cast made up entirely of Free State actors, including talent from Botshabelo, Thaba Nchu, and Bloemfontein.
“18” tells the gripping story of a mother seeking justice for her slain daughter. After the court sentences her daughter’s killers to only two years in prison, the mother takes matters into her own hands, ultimately leading to tragic consequences when a confrontation escalates, resulting in her own death.
The film beautifully showcases the Bloemfontein Central Business District, with a significant portion of the plot unfolding in the courtroom, most notably at the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court.
Pulane Moleko, the creator of the film, revealed that the initial script was written in 2022 and has since been developed further. She aims to highlight the themes of unforgiveness and revenge, conveying that such actions can deprive individuals of their lives and peace. Her message is clear: seeking revenge often leads to more pain rather than resolution.
Filming took place in May 2025, and according to Pulane, she has more projects in the works as she embraces her passion for storytelling through film and writing.
“I am definitely going to knock on more doors for funding and distribution. I am not going to give up and will continue to share my stories,” stated Pulane.
After the premiere, the packed audience had the opportunity to engage with the cast and crew during a question-and-answer session, where they learned more about the film and its creation.
“18” not only highlights the talent present within the Free State but also proves that high-quality films can emerge from the region. All the actors delivered exceptional performances, making it clear that Free State has a wealth of acting talent ready to shine.
