The Department of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environmental Affairs recently held its inaugural District Women in Agriculture Imbizo at Simon Sefuthi Hall in Botshabelo, within the Mangaung Metro Municipality.
The event, which aimed to empower women in the agricultural sector, was graced by the Executive Mayor, Cllr Gregory Nthatisi. In his welcoming remarks, he highlighted the rich history of Botshabelo, emphasizing its pivotal role in the journey towards democracy.
He encouraged all women in attendance to enjoy the day and acknowledged MEC Rockman for her unwavering commitment to uplifting black communities and empowering those eager to cultivate the land.
At the Imbizo, women in agriculture shared both their experiences and the numerous challenges they face, addressing issues such as access to land, infrastructure, and market opportunities. Various representatives from organizations like Women in Agriculture and Rural Development (WARD), Women in Crop and Animal Production, Horticulture, and Wool Production voiced their concerns and aspirations.
Notable contributions came from female farmers, including Dimakatso Modupe from Lesika Cooperative, who expressed gratitude for the support received from the Department.
Dikonelo Motseki from Sidern Trading shared insights into her business and encouraged women to engage in programs designed to help them grow and succeed in their ventures. Sophy from Modulaqhowa inspired attendees by emphasizing the need for women to have a dream, desire, direction, and determination to achieve their goals.
In addition, various stakeholders, including representatives from the Commission of Gender Equality, the IDC, and the Mangaung Metro Municipality, made presentations to support the objectives of the event.
In her address, MEC Rockman noted that many of the challenges raised by women farmers were consistent across different towns.
“Most of us are free, but financially and socially we are still not free,” she remarked.
She highlighted the disproportionate impact of capital exclusion on women and children and pointed out that women still earn 30% less than men for the same work. Empowering women, she asserted, is critical for the advancement of society as a whole, acknowledging the often underestimated roles women play in nurturing households and the nation.
The Imbizo concluded with a renewed sense of purpose among attendees, reinforcing the importance of unity and collaboration in overcoming the challenges faced by women in agriculture.
