The LetS Art Recycled Fashion Show (LARF) was recently held at the Bloemfontein Civic Theatre, showcasing the remarkable talents and creativity of learners who crafted clothes from recycled materials. With the theme “From Africa to Japan,” the event celebrated not only artistic expression but also environmental awareness and cultural fusion.

Organized by Nia Teacher and Princess Solomon-Motloung, the showcase featured participants from various schools, including Academy of Excellence Primary and High School, Lekhulong, Sehunelo, Caleb Motshabi, Kagisho, Comm Tech, Lereko, and Petunia Secondary School. The event brought together learners from all grades, highlighting a mix of primary and high school talent.

The showcase began with inspiring speech performances and transitioned into lively dance presentations. Students creatively used recycled materials, like plastic and newspaper, in their attire and performances, blending African and Japanese influences.

Drama groups and poets also contributed, with improvised lines and expressive movements that enriched the creative atmosphere.

Awards were presented for exceptional talent and collaboration. Lekhulong Secondary School’s Grade 9 drama group took home the Best Showcase award, while Boikanyo Lejara from the same school was recognized as the First Runner-Up in the dance category.

Buhle Mkhuzangwe, a Grade 6 student from the Academy of Excellence Primary, secured the Second Runner-Up spot. Additionally, Molemo Bango and Leano Ngwasheng, both Grade 3 learners from the Academy of Excellence Primary School, received the Arts and Crafts Great Effort Award, and the Academy's Showstoppers dance group won the Showstopper/Astounding Award.

Princess Solomon-Motloung emphasized the significance of the program, stating, "Through LARF, we continue to create opportunities for learners to discover their talents, collaborate across disciplines, and explore how creativity can contribute to environmental responsibility and future livelihoods. By incorporating recycling into not only fashion but also performances and creative expression, the program encourages learners to see discarded materials as resources and their ideas as possibilities."
