Motshidisi cuts hair and gives men a fresh look

Being a barber might be seen as a male-dominated field, but not for Motshidisi Thuntsa from Namibia Square in Bloemfontein.

She specializes in brush cuts and the bald head style known in the township as Chiskop, which involves shaving off all the hair. What’s intriguing is that she has a substantial number of male clients who seek her out for haircuts. Motshidisi owns a small salon in Freedom Square at the container park, popularly known as “Ha Papa G” (Papa G’s Place).

Motshidisi explains that since her salon is located next to a car wash, many men who bring their cars in for washing take the opportunity to get a haircut while they wait, prompting her to learn how to cut hair.

Self-taught, Motshidisi practiced her skills on young men who wanted brush cuts and bald styles, allowing her to improve and specialize in these haircuts. She charges R30 for a Chiskop and R40 for a brush cut. She emphasizes her desire to change the narrative that cutting hair is solely a man’s job, showing that women can excel in this profession, too.

“Cutting hair is not just a masculine duty, but a skill that anyone can learn,” she states.

One of the challenges Motshidisi faces is resistance from some men due to cultural and religious beliefs, who prefer male barbers. However, she is grateful that many of her male clients appreciate her work and continue to support her.

Motshidisi is making a living through her craft and is passionate about breaking stereotypes in the barbering industry. She can be reached at 073 146 6362.
