Since 2009, Lebohang Marvin Mphulenyane from Welkom has been a passionate performer of poetry, using his art to illuminate the struggles and hopes of black Africans.

His journey into writing began from a deep need to speak out and be heard amidst what he describes as a pervasive darkness surrounding his people. For Lebohang, poetry became the essential platform to convey powerful messages and inspire change.

Being recognized as a veteran poet and sharing stages with renowned artists at a relatively young age is both an honour and a privilege for Lebohang. He views this recognition as a long-awaited platform where voices like his can finally be amplified and heard on a larger scale.

Audiences attending his performances can expect pure, evocative poetry crafted to “scatter the rainclouds that dim the horizon” of black people. His work is uniquely bilingual, weaving together poems in both Sesotho and English, creating a rich and authentic cultural experience. He encourages audiences to come and discover his message firsthand.

Currently, Lebohang is navigating the emotional challenges of recent loss—juggling the preparation for his sister’s funeral alongside rehearsals for the Second Annual Free State Poetry Night. Despite the difficulty, he remains committed to delivering his art with the passion and dedication it deserves.

Lebohang Marvin Mphulenyane uses poetry not just as expression, but as a catalyst to foster understanding, unity, and light for his community.
