Civil organizations Banna Buang Free State Men’s Forum and Buang Basadi have warmly welcomed the life sentence imposed on Songezo Steven Jakane from Botshabelo for the brutal murder of his girlfriend, Mpho Judith Moalosi.
Moalosi lost her life on June 17, 2024, with her body discovered along Dewetsdorp Road, showing multiple signs of injury.
In the wake of this tragedy, both Banna Buang and Buang Basadi have actively supported Moalosi’s family while advocating for stricter penalties against gender-based violence (GBV) offenders. The organizations have attended court proceedings and continuously pushed for Jakane to be denied bail.
Archie Phinithi from Banna Buang expressed gratitude that justice has been served, noting the lack of remorse exhibited by Jakane after the crime. “We have followed this case closely, just like we do with others that matter to our communities,” he stated.
Phinithi further credited the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and Warrant Officer Barnes from the Sonskyn Police Station for their roles in delivering justice, especially for Moalosi’s minor children. He also called for speedier investigations into the Machaka case and other matters awaiting resolution. “As Banna Buang Free State Men’s Forum, we emphasize that no life shall be lost while we remain silent,” he asserted.
Thoko Nogabe from Buang Basadi also acknowledged the efforts of Warrant Officer Barnes in ensuring that Jakane received a life sentence. She applauded the judge, state attorney, and other supportive stakeholders, including the Mangaung Metro Municipality, Premier Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae, civil rights organizations, pastors, and community members for their dedication to ending gender-based violence.
“We appreciate all the support we have received. May Jakane face the justice he deserves by going to jail,” Nogabe concluded.
