You cannot mention the Free State music scene without recognizing Khahliso “Khay” Pitso, a legendary figure whose contributions have left an indelible mark. This year, Khay celebrates an impressive 40 years in the music industry and 27 years in event management.
Recently honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 4th Central Music Awards held in Bloemfontein, his journey began in childhood, where he naturally took on leadership roles within his peer group. This early initiative propelled him to explore new ideas, ultimately leading to significant achievements in the entertainment sector.
Khay’s education includes a plethora of business and artistic workshops starting in 1993, which honed his skills and understanding of the industry. In 1986, he was among the runners-up in the National Gala Finals of the Shell Road to Fame and later claimed the top position at the Roodepoort International Eisteddfod.

In 1994, Khay began performing at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival and rose to prominence, winning the FNB Dance Kopano for three consecutive years. He also featured in a notable television program discussing artist development in South Africa. His music career ignited in 1987 with the group 3rd Base, which performed alongside prominent South African artists like Letta Mbulu, Brenda Fassie, and Lucky Dube.
As Kwaito emerged in the late 1980s, 3rd Base found itself sharing stages with popular groups like Bongo Maffin and TKZee. Their debut album included the hit “Mabaeda,” which catapulted them into the spotlight. In 1998, recognizing the potential of Free State artists, Khay founded My Flow Entertainment to provide essential management and guidance for local talent. Through this platform, he has facilitated the careers of many artists, including the Afro-pop group Kaya and the Kwaito group Choyz.

Khay’s mentorship extends to numerous individuals, including Preston “Presss” Sihlangu, whom he supported during the Coca Cola Pop Star competition. His expertise has also influenced the careers of artists like the late Peter Nthwane, whose albums sold thousands of copies under Khay’s guidance. Khay’s efforts not only bolstered the careers of many but also enriched the cultural landscape of the Free State.
He introduced youth events into the MACUFE program, ensuring that new generations have the opportunity to shine. As he celebrates these achievements, Khay continues to be a pillar in the music community, dedicated to promoting and nurturing local talent.
