The Free State MEC for the Department of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environmental Affairs (DARDEA), Elzabe Rockman, continues to provide vital support for disaster relief efforts in Koppies, located within the Ngwathe Municipality of the Free State.
In collaboration with the South African Red Cross Society and the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), the Department successfully delivered essential aid to 200 residents affected by recent disasters at the Kwakwatsi hall. This initiative aims to assist those impacted by the devastating hail storm and strong winds that struck on 10 August 2026, causing significant damage to homes and livestock.

MEC Rockman highlighted the importance of integrating emergency relief efforts with sustainable development, ensuring that these distributions are aligned with broader provincial food security initiatives.
In her address to the community, MEC Rockman expressed the power of collaboration during crises.

“We work together with Red Cross and IDC, bringing together private sectors as well as NGOs because together we can make a difference in our communities. We were here in March and we assisted several churches and ECDs with seeds and garden tools to promote food security and encourage people to produce their own food. To the young people, while the unemployment rate is very high, by producing your own food, you will not only generate an income for yourself but also contribute to feeding others,” said MEC Rockman.
