The community of Thabanatshoana village in Qwaqwa is still reeling in shock over the murder of taxi boss, Matshediso Nteo, who died in a hail of bullets on Saturday, 24 January.
The 58-year old Nteo was the Chairperson of Qwauta Association, a taxi association in Qwaqwa, a position she was recently elected to.
Police Spokesperson Mahlomola Kareli said Tseseng Police received a report regarding a shooting incident in the area on Saturday, at 20:55. The body of a female was discovered lying in a pool of blood inside a shack.
Matshediso Nteo sustained multiple gunshot wounds to her body and was certified dead at the scene.
“While investigations are ongoing, it is noted that the deceased was recently elected as the Chairperson of the Qwauta Association within the taxi industry,” said Kareli.
According to the police’s preliminary investigations, four suspects were seen in the vicinity and may have fled the scene in an unidentified white vehicle with Gauteng (GP) registration numbers.
Jabu Mbalula, the MEC for Community Safety, Roads and Transport, has condemned the killing of Nteo. He described her as a dedicated leader who had served in various roles, including deputy secretary, secretary, deputy chairperson, and chairperson in 2017, 2021, and 2025.
The MEC strongly condemned the murder, stating that bloodshed in the Free State taxi industry won’t be tolerated.
“I extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and everyone affected by this senseless murder. I’m mortified that a woman leader was gunned down,” said MEC Mbalula.
A manhunt has been launched to find the killers, and the police are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information regarding the whereabouts of the suspects to come forward.
