The Deputy President, Paul Mashatile, has called for stronger collaboration between government, communities, and the private sector to improve rural development during the two-day Rural Development Indaba held at Lemo Green Park in Bloemfontein.

The indaba, hosted by the Department of Land Reform and Rural Development, brought together government leaders, community representatives, farmers, youth organisations, and stakeholders to discuss challenges facing rural communities and solutions to improve development, job creation, and service delivery.

Mashatile told delegates that rural development remains central to South Africa’s economic growth and the fight against poverty in rural areas.“We must work together to build sustainable rural economies that create jobs, improve infrastructure, and ensure that rural communities are not left behind,” Mashatile.

He further stressed the need for investment in agriculture, roads, water infrastructure, and other essential services to improve living conditions in rural communities.

Mashatile added that stronger cooperation between government departments, communities, and the private sector is key to addressing unemployment and inequality in rural areas.

The indaba also highlighted the importance of involving young people in agriculture and rural economic activities to strengthen local economies.

Mamodiehi Letooane said rural communities continue to face challenges that require urgent attention and long-term solutions. “Rural development is not only about agriculture, but also about creating opportunities for young people, women, and communities to build a better future,” Letooane.

Elton Seleke Khotle said rural communities need stronger support systems to ensure sustainable development and growth.“We need practical solutions that will change the lives of people in rural communities. Development must reach the people on the ground and create real impact,” Khotle.

A community member at the indaba raised concerns about limited access to funding, poor service delivery, and lack of infrastructure in rural areas, calling for more government support and investment in essential services.

The Rural Development Indaba concluded with calls for continued collaboration between all stakeholders to ensure inclusive rural development, economic growth, and improved livelihoods for rural communities across South Africa.
