Welkom Gold Fields Modernization Drive Resumes with Stringent Environmental Safeguards
Underground secondary recovery technologies deliver extended mine life while prioritizing solar water recycling systems.
WELKOM — Following extensive stakeholder consultations and regulatory clearances from the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, modernized secondary recovery operations have officially resumed across three shafts in the Welkom gold fields.
Employing advanced automated scanning and water-recycling closed loop circuits, the operations extend the economic horizon of the local operations by an estimated 12 years while reducing surface water withdrawal by more than 40%.
Local business chambers have welcomed the milestone, noting that the sustained mine presence directly supports local engineering workshops, retail stores, and service providers across the Matjhabeng municipality.
