The Free State MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Elsabe Rockman, began her engagement with farmers in Botshabelo on Thursday, January 29. This initiative provides a platform for local farmers to discuss their challenges directly with the MEC, ensuring their concerns are heard and addressed.
The event took place at the Lenyora La Thuto Comprehensive School hall, drawing a diverse group of participants, including small-scale, backyard, and chicken farmers, as well as various farming cooperatives from Botshabelo and surrounding areas.
One of the primary issues highlighted was stock theft, with farmers reporting significant losses. Many shared harrowing stories, including one farmer whose herd diminished from twenty-five cows to just five due to theft. They called on the Department of Agriculture for assistance in enhancing security measures to combat this ongoing problem.
Other challenges raised included the scarcity of land for grazing and farming, municipal bylaws, difficulties in securing funding, and water accessibility. Additionally, farmers expressed concerns about their lack of farming equipment, with many requesting assistance in obtaining tractors and tools to facilitate their work.
Livestock owners also appealed to MEC Rockman for the establishment of a veterinary service in Botshabelo, as the nearest veterinary clinic is located in Thaba Nchu, making transportation costs prohibitive. A local veterinary service would greatly alleviate the burden on farmers within the township.
The second day of engagement is set to continue on Friday, January 30, as the MEC will address farmers.
