The Mtyingizane family had always been close-knit, residing in the peaceful community of Itumeleng in Jaggersfontein.

However, their lives took a drastic turn on September 11, 2022, when the community was hit by a devastating tragedy. The collapse of the Jaggersfontein Development Mine dam tailings resulted in widespread destruction, leaving the Mtyingizane family and many others grappling with the overwhelming task of rebuilding their shattered lives.

Among those deeply affected were the Mtyingizanes, who found themselves struggling to come to terms with the loss of their home and the upheaval of their once-familiar surroundings.

The tragic event also saw 24-year-old Xoliswa Mtyingizane taking on the role of legal guardian to her four younger cousins, who had lost their parents before the mine wall collapsed. Yet, amidst the darkness, a glimmer of hope emerged on 14 August, as the Mtyingizane family received a newly built home.

The official handover ceremony was led by prominent figures including the Premier of the Free State province, Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae, and various MECs, symbolizing a new beginning for the Mtyingizane family and their fellow community members.

Xoliswa, overwhelmed with gratitude and relief, expressed her joy at finally having a place to call home. With the unwavering support of the government and the community, she looked forward to creating new memories and leaving the past behind.

Premier Letsoha-Mathae, in her address, emphasized the significance of the moment, acknowledging the arduous journey the community had undertaken and commending their resilience.

The handover of 106 new homes to the disaster-stricken community marked not only the physical reconstruction but also the restoration of dignity and hope, signifying a fresh start and a brighter future for all.

As the Mtyingizane family stepped into their new home, they carried with them a renewed sense of optimism, ready to embrace the promise of a better tomorrow.
