Dance has always been an integral part of South African culture, serving as a vibrant form of expression that brings joy, excitement, and a sense of pride.
This year, dance took center stage at the 2025 Edition of Macufe with “Rhythm of Change: An African Dance Pantsula Dance Fusion,” which delighted audiences at the Civic Theatre in Bloemfontein. This production is one of the standout creations from the Free State that contributed to the Macufe festivities.

Directed, written, and produced by Bongani Zulu, “Rhythm of Change” is a powerful dance production that melds traditional African dance, Pantsula, and modern movement. The performance celebrates African identity, tradition, and transformation, telling compelling stories of pride, unity, and cultural rebirth. Through rhythm and movement, it captures the essence of nation-building and social cohesion, allowing audiences to reconnect with their heritage.

Bongani Zulu shared that the title of his production was inspired by the theme of Macufe 2025, emphasizing a core message about reclaiming African heritage while navigating contemporary identities.
“I work with developing artists. Having my production selected for Macufe is an honor and a significant opportunity. Being part of the return of Macufe is a wonderful chance for growth,” said Zulu.
This performance not only highlights the skill and creativity of its artists but also reinforces the importance of dance in celebrating and preserving African culture.
