Free State poetry veteran Raselebeli “Magic” Khotseng is set to showcase his remarkable talent at the upcoming Free State Veterans Poetry Festival. Describing poetry as the blood that keeps him alive, the 64-year-old artist is a beloved figure in his community and throughout the Free State.
Born and raised in the Batho location of Bloemfontein, Magic’s journey in poetry began during his school years when he joined a youth organization that included notable figures like Gilbert Modise. While the organization offered various activities, it was poetry that captured his heart and determined the course of his life.

His passion for poetry initially started as a light-hearted endeavor—he would write poems for the school notice board. However, a turning point came in 1993 when he was inspired by the late Nigerian author and poet Omoseye Bolaji to submit his work to the Free State News, a local newspaper edited by Bolaji. The success of his first poem sparked a prolific writing career for Ntate Magic, leading to features in magazines and on radio stations such as Motheo FM.

One of his most notable pieces, titled “Do You Remember Tornado,” addressed a historical tornado that struck Bloemfontein, aiming to educate the public on the event and its significance. Magic emphasizes clarity in his writing, striving to express his message in a way that resonates with all audiences.
“A poet is a person who can play with words,” he says. “He or she expresses themselves through language, connecting with people through their cultural background.”
Magic will perform at the second Annual Free State Veterans Poetry Festival, scheduled for September 20-23 at the Civic Theatre in Bloemfontein. He encourages community members to come and experience the magic of his poetry live.
