The Matla Tourism Youth Organization hosted the 6th Annual Lucas Majozi Commemoration Day at Mooifontein Primary School Hall, an event that was both educational and deeply moving for the community of Zastron in the Free State. The organization expressed its sincere gratitude to the family of the late World War II Veteran Lucas Majozi for trusting them with the legacy of this hero.
The event raised the bar by accommodating local veterans who shared insightful words of wisdom and encouragement.
Speaking on behalf of the Matla Tourism Youth Organization, the coordinator noted that the celebration has become a powerful educational tool for stakeholders and young people, shedding light on the bravery of World War II veterans. The day featured performances from local schools, including Zama Primary School, where young Grade 2 learners enthralled the audience by performing the African Union Anthem under the supervision of Zoleka Athney Heugh. Mooifontein Primary School and Samuel Johnson High School also participated, showcasing local talent.
A highlight of the day was a tree planting ceremony led by Thapelo Monoana, who donated trees to be planted in memory of Lucas Majozi. The family of the late veteran had the honor of planting the first tree, followed by other stakeholders, creating a lasting green legacy for the school.

The gathering of local veterans and seniors illuminated the event, with a token of appreciation from the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) presented to the Majozi family, received by great-granddaughter Rethabile Thakhuli-Majozi, supported by Nicholas Itumeleng Seatlholo from the Legal Satellite Office in Bloemfontein.
Expressing their gratitude, Rethabile Thakhuli-Majozi remarked, “We would like to thank the initiative of embracing the legacy left behind by our grandfather. We are very proud of you, Mr. Lechoo and your team. This support structure signifies that the community is recognizing the bravery of our World War heroes. You have our support, and we wish you prosperity in this Commemoration Day movement until it reaches the hearts of government officials and resonates nationwide.”
The event organizers shared their vision for 2027, aiming to include local veterans from all three towns of Mohokare—Zastron, Rouxville, and Smithfield—seeking to honor those who made impactful contributions in the past. They trust this initiative will elevate Mohokare on the map for heritage tourism in the Free State.
After six successful years in Zastron, the Matla Tourism Youth Organization, led by Lechoo Molahlehi, is expanding the Lucas Majozi Commemoration Day to become a Mohokare Municipal Heritage Celebration. The commemoration continues to evolve as a beacon of heritage in the Free State.
