For Afrika, in partnership with Woolworths, organized a meaningful field excursion in honour of World Food Day on Wednesday, 30 September, in Thaba Nchu. The event saw a team from Woolworths step out of their offices and stores, rolling up their sleeves to volunteer and make a tangible impact in the community.
The initiative took place at Khulani Pre-School in Zone 5, Thaba Nchu, where the Woolworths team engaged with the children, enjoying playtime, interacting with the ECD staff, and learning from the Matron of the centre, Bongiwe Lorraine. The team prepared and fed nutritious porridge to the children, highlighting For Afrika’s commitment to supporting ECD centres with healthy meals.

Notably, last year’s visit saw the ECD centre operating from a corrugated iron shack. Thanks to For Afrika, a new, welcoming structure has since been built, much to the delight of both the children and their parents. Witnessing the transformation of the centre was heartwarming for the Woolworths team.
Following their time at Khulani, the team visited a community garden at another ECD site in the Station View area, also in Thaba Nchu. For Afrika is dedicated to promoting food security and sustainable livelihoods, and Woolworths’ support extends to community and ECD gardens.
At this location, the Woolworths team learned the principles of creating an agro-ecological garden, one that is cultivated naturally without chemicals.
“For Afrika’s vision is to see an Africa that thrives and is self-sustained, and Woolworths is helping us to do just that. Through this programme, they contributed to the food security of this community and empowerment thereof” said Craig Kudita from For Afrika.
Milton Fredericks, Support Specialist for the Community Inclusive Justice Institute at Woolworth said they were celebrating World food day which is usually celebrated on 16 October and they collaborated with For Afrika and had their local stores volunteer their time to get their hands dirty, and it was all about food security, encouraging and educating their employees around local communities and what they are doing around food security
“It’s all about alleviating hunger. Today, we are here to support this initiative and encourage our colleagues and communities to start their own gardening projects. A successful garden could also provide economic empowerment opportunities, and you can find yourself contributing to your local community,” Milton remarked.
