Zozipho Nyulu, an emerging filmmaker, credits her profound love for art as the spark that inspired her to pursue filmmaking. Beginning her journey in 2024, Zozipho joined the Nala program, designed specifically for women and female filmmakers. This initiative brought industry icons to share knowledge and mentor upcoming talent, providing Zozipho with the foundation and tools she needed to thrive in the competitive film industry.
“How you perceive filmmaking shapes how others view your work,” Zozipho reflects. “The challenges you face daily push you to grow and evolve.” She emphasizes that inspiration can come from many places and experiences, a realization that came during her involvement in a recent film project she led by a female director. Playing an extra in this project, she was deeply involved in continuity—a hands-on experience that allowed her to bring to life the lessons learned from Nala.
Respect and articulation stand out as critical values in her journey. She warns that lacking them can jeopardize an entire project. She praises fellow filmmakers in Bloemfontein, particularly women like Karabelo Plaatjie, who are opening doors and creating opportunities for others in the industry.
Zozipho’s goal in filmmaking is to convey the message that a black child is enough, regardless of background. Her future films will be dedicated to inspiring and encouraging young minds. She expresses excitement about the growing presence and success of young women in film, breaking boundaries.
Her advice to aspiring filmmakers is to keep pushing and never give up, as not everyone will understand your vision or believe in your work.
“Don’t wait for outside validation. Be patient and always willing to learn.”
Zozipho is currently working on her own script, bringing her vision to life and carving her path in the film world with passion and purpose.
