The Free State Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and Human Settlements has recently been bolstered with the acquisition of over 190 ICT devices, comprising laptops and desktops. This initiative aims to modernise the Department and enhance service delivery throughout the province.

The significant contribution was made by MEC for CoGTA and Human Settlements, Mr. Saki Mokoena, with funding exceeding R5 million from the Provincial Treasury, following a compelling business case for government system modernisation.

Historically, the Department has struggled with outdated computers that were slow, unreliable, and incompatible with contemporary digital solutions. The introduction of this new equipment will enable officials to operate more efficiently, securely, and collaboratively. Furthermore, it promotes the use of modern technologies like cloud computing, allowing staff to access documents and information online rather than being confined to a single office computer. This transition is set to improve turnaround times, enhance coordination with municipalities, and facilitate quicker responses to community needs.

MEC Mokoena emphasized that this investment is a crucial step toward building a more effective and responsive government.

“The handover of more than 190 computers is not merely a replacement of old machines; it represents a strategic investment in the Department’s capacity to function efficiently and serve our communities better. By modernising our ICT environment, we are fortifying our ability to support municipalities, boost efficiency, safeguard government information, and respond more proactively to community needs,” he stated.

This investment aligns with South Africa’s Digital Transformation Roadmap, aimed at creating a capable, secure, responsive, and citizen-centered state.

While acknowledging that the Department continues to face performance challenges, MEC Mokoena noted promising signs of improvement. He also took a moment to express gratitude to outgoing officials for their dedicated service to the government.
