Powerlifting champion Kagisho Segatlaka is on a mission to showcase the strength and talent of the Free State province on both national and international stages. Based in Welkom, Kagisho has earned numerous medals in the sport of powerlifting and is determined to hoist the provincial flag high.
Competing under the World Powerlifting Congress South Africa (WPCSA), Kagisho has made significant strides in his career. In 2025, he participated in the Masters 2 division (ages 45 to 49) with a body weight of under 82.5kg, achieving first place at both the National and World Championships in Benoni and Durban.
Looking ahead to 2026, Kagisho is set to compete in three major events: the WPC Nationals in Durban on 20-21 June, the African Championships from 24-27 September also in Durban, and finally, the WPC World Championships scheduled for 16-20 November in the United States.
To successfully represent the Free State at these upcoming competitions, Kagisho is seeking financial sponsorship to cover essential expenses, including registration, attire, transportation from Welkom to Durban, accommodation, and his flight to the USA.
“Powerlifting is a strength sport that focuses on maximum weight lifted in three disciplines: squat, bench press, and deadlift. I am incredibly passionate about powerlifting and have dedicated my time to training without a formal trainer or any sponsorship for the past few years. These events often take place outside the Free State, and I’ve had to finance my participation out of my own pocket,” Kagisho explained.
