Acclaimed Free State theatre-maker, filmmaker and activist Jane Mpholo has been named one of the 10 exceptional 2026 Proteas of Mzansi honourees.
Born and raised in Botshabelo and now based in Bloemfontein, Jane was recognised for her outstanding community upliftment work and the lasting social impact she continues to create through the performing arts.
The Proteas of Mzansi initiative, organised by Nation Builder, celebrates 10 South African women each year who are making a meaningful difference in their fields and communities. The initiative honours women whose work creates hope, opens opportunities and contributes to a better South Africa.
For Jane, the recognition comes during a remarkable year. It is the fourth award she has received in 2026 for her national and international impact, particularly her work in using theatre, film and storytelling to promote healing, create safe spaces and inspire change.
Earlier this year, the University of the Free State recognised Jane for her global impact and named her a 2026 Kovsie Ambassador, alongside social media influencer Lebo Molax. She also received a special recognition award from the Free State World Digital Newspaper and was included on the 2026 Sunday World Heroic Women List.
Each recognition has been deeply meaningful to Jane, while also reminding her of the responsibility that comes with her work.
“These recognitions are humbling. They remind me that I am on the right path and that I must continue using my skills to create safe spaces, healing and opportunities for others,” says Jane.
The Proteas of Mzansi event took place at the KWV Winery on 27 August 2026. The gathering brought together women and leaders who are contributing to positive change across South Africa. For Jane, the occasion also included a special personal moment when she met fellow Kovsie and former Miss South Africa and
Miss World, Rolene Strauss. Rolene was a guest speaker at the event and is also a 2014 Kovsie Ambassador Award recipient.
“Meeting Rolene was a full-circle moment for me. We are both Kovsies, and her story, like mine, is shaped by turning pain into purpose,” says Jane.
Reflecting on the honour, Jane adds: “I am grateful for the recognition. It came at a time when I needed it most. The Nation Builder team and my fellow Proteas have been nothing short of amazing. They feel like family.”
Jane continues to use performance, film and creative storytelling to support communities, amplify important voices and help people imagine new possibilities for their lives. Her recognition as a Protea of Mzansi is not only a celebration of what she has achieved, but also an affirmation of the power of art to heal, connect and create lasting change.
