Rugby is often perceived as a sport dominated by whites and associated with the elite, but the Botshabelo Women’s Rugby Club is actively promoting participation among women in the township and nurturing future rugby stars.
Established on September 15, 2021, at Kgorathuto Secondary School, the Botshabelo Women’s Rugby Club aims to advance rugby in the area. They practice at Thari Ya Tshepe Primary School in Botshabelo, Free State. The club focuses on schools’ rugby, offering programs for ages U11, U13, U15, and U18, as well as senior rugby for both males and females aged 19 and older.
As a full member of the Free State Rugby Union, the club participates in all associated programs. Its establishment was motivated by the large number of players who engaged in school rugby but had no opportunities after graduation. The club seeks to bridge the gap between school sports and club development, creating a pathway for players to continue their rugby journey. Despite facing challenges due to limited resources, the Botshabelo Women’s Rugby Club is a passionate and committed organization.
They are continually seeking opportunities to expand their partnerships and support, particularly because they struggle with a lack of essential rugby equipment, clothing, and tools.
The vision of the Botshabelo Rugby Club is to provide the community with the best possible opportunities to play rugby and help young talents reach their full potential.
Their mission encompasses several goals, including: Providing opportunities for physical activity and promoting health, Developing life skills, Fostering social cohesion and community engagement, Creating economic opportunities, Inspiring pride and motivation, Building teams of all ages and skill levels, Promoting equal development for male and female players to mention just a few.
These objectives reflect the club’s dedication to growing the sport of rugby in Botshabelo.
