Khadeair’s song, “Magumba,” is currently taking South Africa by storm and lighting up dance floors across the country.

Although “Magumba” was released two years ago, it has only recently gained traction, and now everyone is vibing to it. The song’s success has demonstrated that talent from Free State can reach impressive heights and compete with some of the best artists in South Africa.

Khadeair hails from Botshabelo in the Free State and is also the creator of the hit song “Sneke Neke,” which enjoyed popularity in the region. The Welkom duo, 2Point 1, has also experienced success since breaking into the mainstream. With songs like “Batho Bana,” “Stimela,” and the recent “Standwa Saam,” 2Point 1 continues to produce hits that are celebrated across the country, securing gigs throughout South Africa, Africa, and beyond.

For a long time, Free State has been overshadowed by KZN and Johannesburg, which are often regarded as the dominant forces in the music industry. Recently, Limpopo has emerged on the music scene with its unique sound, Lekompo, which is not only popular locally but is also gaining recognition across South Africa.

In the Free State, Lekompo was once dismissed as “TAAP-TAAP music,” but artists like Makhadzi, Kharisma, Shandi Mama, King Monada, Shebeshxt, and Tribby wa di Bozza have successfully captured South Africa’s attention and earned bookings in various venues.

Free State is still developing its distinctive sound, historically known for Tshepe (Sesotho Hip Hop) and Koriana, a genre that originated in Lesotho, fused with Sesotho hip hop to create Tshepe.

Artists such as Seneath, Troy Mosioua, Bonaventure, Kulax, Dankie Zbiya, MC Fire,J-Cob, Kaya, Nayshen SA, Maida, Ceega Wa Meropa, Taylor K, Press, Andrianto, Kamo Xaba, and Khathapillar have shown that Free State has the potential to excel in music.

The song “Diqabang,” featuring Sol Phenduka, Kamo Xaba, Smash SA, and Khathapillar, enjoyed a great run in 2024, becoming a staple in many households and dance venues as it played repeatedly.

Kamo Xaba from Qwaqwa and Khathapillar from Bloemfontein significantly contributed to the success of “Diqabang,” with Kamo Xaba joining a rare group of Sesotho vocalists featured in hit songs.

Prince Kaybee has also had a successful career, releasing numerous hits and collaborating with well-known artists like Busiswa, TNS, Lady Zamar, and Msaki, among others.

While Free State still has a long way to go in developing a distinctive sound that can dominate national charts, it is undoubtedly making its presence felt and recognized.
