Free State Premier, Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae and the MEC for Finance, Tourism, and Economic Development Ketso “Toto” Makume visited the Hangda Steel factory in Thaba Nchu on 3 October.
The Premier and MEC’s visit came after several ongoing complaints about the factory’s treatment of their employees. Employees complained about the Management allegedly expelling them for joining unions of their choice, injuries, and terrible working conditions.
One of the employees told the Premier about the injuries he sustained, He was burned on his arms, legs, and face and as a result, lost the use of his arms and the was a lack of support from the company’s Management.

The Premier and her entourage inspected the factory’s premises. Inside the business premises was a tuck shop that sold what was believed to be expired goods.
There was also alcohol inside the shop which was confiscated by law enforcement officials as the business did not have a permit to sell alcohol.
“As much as we appreciate investment in our province, what we will not allow is the exploitation of our people. Some of the complaints we have been receiving were absolutely horrible which left us with no other option but to come and see for ourselves,” she said.
