Kgolagano FM, a community radio station based in Thaba Nchu, is taking significant strides to empower the youth by equipping them with valuable radio skills. This initiative aligns with the station’s mission to discover and nurture budding radio talent within the Free State province.
Recently, Kgolagano FM launched the Youth Radio Training Programme, aimed at providing practical training to young people interested in pursuing a career in radio. Participants are engaged in hands-on training sessions, where they learn essential skills such as voice techniques and the operational aspects of radio broadcasting. The goal is to harness and refine their natural talents, preparing them to become polished radio presenters.
The programme is open to the public, specifically targeting semi-skilled individuals and those passionate about radio in the Free State. According to the station manager, Tebogo Kotwana, the initiative has attracted a diverse group of young people from various backgrounds who are eager to step behind the microphone and showcase their talents.
For those interested in joining the Youth Radio Training Programme, auditions are currently open. Aspiring presenters can submit a voice note that showcases their news and sports presentation skills. These auditions can be sent to Kotwana at 063 422 1559, the programming manager Lehlohonolo Morara at 068 495 4680, or the head of news and sports Masentle Seate at 081 507 1215. Submissions should ideally include clips in Setswana, Sesotho, English, and Afrikaans.
Adding to the station’s recognition, Kgolagano FM was recently honored with the Best Community Radio Station award at the Thaba Nchu Excellence Awards held on November 20. This accolade further affirms the station’s commitment to its community and its role in promoting local talent.
