Mangaung Metro Municipality has condemned land invasions taking place in Lourierpark in Bloemfontein. This comes after some people illegally occupied vacant land in Lourierpark, erecting shacks on Friday 1 March.

David Mckay, the Ward 18 Councillor said he alerted law enforcement about the land invasion and they were on site on 1 March as they were handling the situation.

Lourierpark residents observed with worry as shacks were erected and cars unloaded building materials.

It’s unclear who is behind the land invasion or who said the vacant land was available to be illegally occupied.

Mangaung Metro Municipality said relevant departments were dispatched and were on the ground to assess and intervene, the municipality’s land invasion unit in the Human Settlement directorate opened a case.

“While the municipality does have a constitutional mandate to ensure where required and with available resources that all citizens can enjoy their basic rights and further gain authorized access to land and housing, it also has a duty to intervene where land invasion occur,” said the Municipality
