The Andre Huegenot Theatre in Bloemfontein is about to come alive as the nationally acclaimed and respected musical, Mantsopa, will be performed in the City of Roses.

The play is part of Macufe festivities and tells the powerful story of Nkhono Mantsopa, a respected woman, prophetess, and hero.

Mantsopa: A Woman of Power Beyond Herself will showcase on 4 and 5 September at 14:00 and 20:00.

Written and directed by the award-winning Dr Jerry Mofokeng wa Makhetha, the musical continues to capture audiences across South Africa, and Free State residents are about to see this powerful production for the first time in their backyard.

Speaking to Free State World, Dr. Jerry Mofokeng Wa Makhetha said it was vital to tell the story of Mantsopa because she was important to the African soil, she was an African, and Africans need to tell African stories in an African way.

The production fuses culture, dance, poetry, music, and Basotho storytelling.

“This play is about women, it’s about Basotho culture, and Identity.” Said Dr. Jerry.

He stated that the play is a mirror for one to discover themselves, their calling, and how they respond to it.

People can expect a performance that is well-refined and world-class. The story is local, but the production is national and international. A well-crafted production with local actors who gave their heart and soul to the production, and told a story exceptionally.

The Basotho culture will be elevated through the play.

“I expect Basotho to leave the theatre very proud of who they are. Mantsopa is not just a play or concert. It’s a celebration.” Said Dr Jerry.

He encourages everyone attending the play to be clad in their Basotho blankets and attire as they are about to see Basotho culture and storytelling in a different dimension that will leave them beaming with pride.

The play also showcases the spiritual side of Mantsopa, telling her story in full.

“You don’t know what you are missing by not coming to Andre Huegenot theatre to watch Mantsopa. People ululate, whistle, dance, it’s a celebration, and you are invited to Andre Huegenot theatre to be part of this amazing celebration.” Dr Jerry added.

Mantsopa: Woman of Power beyond herself, will showcase on 4 and 5 September 2015 at  14:00 and 20:00. Tickets are only R50 and available at Computicket, Shoprite and Checkers stores nationwide.
