The Northern Cape, renowned for its rich cultural heritage, has been selected to host the 2024 World Tourism Day celebrations. This year’s theme, “Tourism and Peace – 30 Years of Connecting People to Places and Cultures,” aligns perfectly with the province’s deep-rooted traditions and vibrant cultural landscape.
Minister of Tourism Patricia de Lille highlighted the significance of the Northern Cape’s role in this global event, stating, “The Northern Cape stands as a beacon of cultural preservation in South Africa. Hosting World Tourism Day here underscores our commitment to celebrating and protecting the unique cultures that connect people to places across our nation.”
The Northern Cape is home to several key heritage sites that exemplify its cultural richness. Among them is the Augrabies Falls National Park, celebrated not just for its breathtaking natural beauty, but also for its importance to the indigenous Khoisan people. Another notable site is the Wildebeest Kuil Rock Art Centre near Kimberley, where ancient rock engravings provide a glimpse into the lives of the region’s earliest inhabitants.
As the world turns its attention to this year’s celebrations, the Northern Cape will shine as a symbol of peace, cultural exchange, and the enduring legacy of its people.
