Theunissen-born author and rising star, Basetsana Confidence Sheane, is beaming with pride after publishing her debut book titled “Boitshepo O Ithuta Ho Itshepa.” Her achievement is a source of inspiration for the disadvantaged community of Masilo (Theunissen) in the Free State.
Written in Sesotho, “Boitshepo O Ithuta Ho Itshepa” tells the heartwarming tale of an 11-year-old girl navigating the challenges of growing up in an under-resourced community. Faced with discouraging words from her family, Boitshepo begins to lose hope in her dreams. However, with the encouraging support and affirmations from her teachers, she finds the strength to reclaim her confidence and embrace her true self.

To regain her confidence, Boitshepo repeats affirmations learned from her teacher, Mme Tsoai. “Ke motle. Ke bohlale. Ke na le matla. Ke na le bokgoni,” which means “I am beautiful. I am brilliant. I am powerful. I am capable,” became her guiding words on her journey toward self-acceptance.
“In a heartfelt conversation with Mme Tsoai, Boitshepo learns that confidence is essential for achieving goals; being smart or talented alone is not enough. Confidence is the key ingredient,” Basetsana shared.
The inspiration for the book is drawn from various sources, including her own life experiences and her middle name, “Confidence.”

Basetsana explains, “Growing up, I often heard praise for my confidence from parents, teachers, and peers. I wanted to share what helped me build self-confidence to support other young children from similar backgrounds.”
Additionally, her interactions with primary school children in her reading club, Tsebo Ke Lesedi, significantly influenced her writing.

As a passionate Sesotho speaker, Basetsana aims to make the language fashionable and advocates for fluency among children from a young age.
The book is available for R270 for a hard copy, while the soft copy is priced at R176.18 on Amazon. To purchase a copy, interested readers can reach out to Basetsana via WhatsApp at 0695838257.
