In the vibrant world of South African amapiano, two young talents from Thaba-Nchu are making significant strides: Trent Djy (Karabelo Makoane) and Kabila (Karabo Ramphadile). Their journey from school friends to sought-after DJs showcases their shared passion, perseverance, and the irresistible draw of music.

Trent and Kabila’s story began at the now-closed Moutlwatsi Primary School in Thaba-Nchu, but it was in high school that their bond truly solidified. Introduced by a mutual friend, they quickly discovered a common love for music, a passion that set them apart from their peers.
“In our group of friends, we were the ones who really loved music and shared the same taste,” Trent recalls.
The duo officially launched their musical partnership in late 2021, releasing their first mixtapes and steadily building a following. Their big break came in 2023 when they hosted their own show, an achievement they describe as both thrilling and exciting.

One of their notable performances was at the prestigious annual event, We Back Home, where they played alongside well-known artists like Uncle Waffles and Scotts Maphuma. For Trent, the journey into amapiano was a natural progression from his early love of house music. The genre’s infectious rhythms and the pioneering work of artists like Kabza De Small inspired him to dive deeper and pursue a career as a DJ.
The duo’s ability to effortlessly blend their sets is their greatest strength. Sharing similar musical tastes, they find it easy to create their performances, often adding unique flair with energetic dance moves.

“We’re always looking to do the same thing, and our dance moves help us stand out,” they said. Among their most memorable moments is the Sthiba Night event hosted by the Elevators group—a gig that significantly increased their exposure.
However, their journey hasn’t been without challenges. Early on, they faced difficulties in securing gigs and transportation. Their fortunes changed when Ragers Club took them under management, providing vital support. Despite the pressures of the industry, creative disagreements are rare for the duo. When they do arise, they resolve them by listening to each other’s opinions and finding a solution.
Fans can look forward to new music, as a single is set to be released soon.
