Motheo TVET College celebrated a significant milestone with the official opening of Thusanang House at the Botshabelo Campus. This new facility underlines the college’s commitment to enhancing quality learning and training environments for both students and staff.
The opening ceremony was officiated by DHET Deputy Director-General Sam Zungu on behalf of the Minister of Higher Education and Training. The event gathered key stakeholders, including QCTO CEO Vijayen Naidoo, Kreishandwerkerschaft Steinfurt Warendorf (KH) CEO Frank Tischner, College Council Chairperson Jabulani Tshabalala, and various industry partners.
In her welcome address, College Principal Prof. Dipiloane Phutsisi expressed gratitude for the strong partnership with KH from Germany, which will continue to develop over the next four years. She reflected on the history of the Botshabelo Campus, established in 1996 as Leshome Primary School, and acknowledged the efforts of the college’s alumni along with the dedicated staff currently serving there.
Frank Tischner addressed the attendees, sharing insights on the project’s journey that began in September 2024. He emphasized the significance of Project-Based Learning (PBL), which empowers students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios.
Keynote speaker Zungu praised the artisans, particularly noting the significant participation of women in constructing Thusanang House, a notably male-dominated field.
He highlighted the facility as a symbol of the successful collaboration between the German Government and South Africa, showcasing the achievements possible when institutions and communities work together.
Thusanang House represents a powerful example of practical education, having been built by Motheo TVET College students specializing in Bricklaying, Plumbing, Electrical, and Carpentry.
Over about 100 students participated in the construction, gaining hands-on experience that is crucial for their future careers.
The project reinforced the collaborative nature of various trades, illustrating that each discipline relies on the others to create successful outcomes. Under the guidance of dedicated facilitators, students not only constructed a building but also created a learning environment that readies them for the workforce.
Thusanang House stands as a testament to the value of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
