Susan Deke, founder, director of Sue’s Halfway Home for SMD & UC and owner of Dominators Home for Disabled Sports Club, is on a mission to empower young minds through literacy and education.

Inspired by reading to her third-born child, Uzanenkosi, the Petsana, Reits-based Susan saw the positive impact and decided to expand this to benefit other children.

Recognizing the financial burden on parents, Susan integrated a reading initiative into her organization’s objectives and ensuring that children in Petsanazm, Riets in the Free State are capacitated with knowledge.

Four months ago, she reached out to book companies and received generous donations from Biblionef SA. Now, Sue’s Halfway Home holds regular reading sessions as part of their school programs, aiming to inspire a love for reading and learning.

“Reading is vital for children’s cognitive, emotional, and social development,” Susan explained.

She explained further “It fosters empathy, creativity, critical thinking, and builds vocabulary and language skills, setting them up for academic success.”

Susan encourages parents to prioritize reading emphasizing that reading enriches the child’s life and expands their horizon.

Beyond literacy, Sue’s Halfway Home also addresses hunger by providing meals for children and families in need.

Through her dedication, Susan Deke is making a lasting impact on her community in Petsana, Reitz.
