At 104 years old, Mamosidi Ruth Motshabi stands out as arguably the oldest resident in Thaba Nchu. Unlike many others her age, she remains remarkably clear in her speech and vision, although she may need a slightly raised voice to hear. Mamosidi attributes her long life to the blessings she inherited from her father, who lived to be 101.
Born on 1 March 1922, in Trompsburg, she moved to Selosesha Thaba Nchu in 1972. Mamosidi married in 1947 and welcomed her first child a year later. Over her lifetime, she has given birth to seven children, six of whom are still alive, and she also has ten grandchildren.
Reflecting on her childhood, Mamosidi recalls a time filled with play, respect for elders, and church attendance. Meals during her younger years primarily consisted of porridge (pap) and milk, with meat being a rare treat reserved for Sundays.
Mamosidi credits her longevity to her deep love and fear of God. She is a devoted churchgoer, ensuring she never misses a service. Respecting others, regardless of age, is another principle she attributes to her long lifespan.
Her favorite meals include dumplings and meat, as well as her cherished pap and milk, a staple she has loved since childhood. In her leisure time, Mamosidi enjoys reading newspapers and books.
Molefe Sello, 35, one of Mamosidi’s grandchildren, expresses pride in having such a remarkable grandmother. He notes that it is rare to find someone whose grandmother reaches such an impressive age and admires her dedicated church attendance.
