The official launch of the Matlakeng Heritage Digital Museum was a significant milestone in Zastron, showcasing a dedicated effort to preserve and celebrate local heritage through innovative technology. The event attracted government representatives, community elders, local schools, and heritage stakeholders, all united in their commitment to safeguarding cultural identity for future generations.
Lechoo Molahlehi, the Founder of Matla Tourism Youth Organization, presented the initiative, describing the digital museum as a transformative platform aimed at enhancing accessibility, education, and engagement with heritage, particularly for young people.
“The Matlakeng Heritage Digital Museum addresses the challenge of losing valuable stories, traditions, and historical knowledge,” Mr. Molahlehi shared during his speech. “This platform brings history to life through visuals, storytelling, and technology, allowing people to not only learn about history but to experience it.”
The museum is designed to be accessible through exhibitions, schools, and online platforms, promoting wider public participation and educational opportunities. By utilizing interactive storytelling and digital preservation, the project seeks to reconnect communities with their roots while embracing modern innovation.

The launch was made possible thanks to a partnership with the Free State Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, underscoring the importance of collaboration between government and community organizations in heritage preservation and youth empowerment. Nyenye Lebohang from the Language Services Unit delivered a message of support on behalf of the department, commending the initiative for promoting indigenous knowledge, cultural diversity, and community engagement.
“This project showcases how heritage and language can be preserved through technology while educating younger generations about their identity and history. It is a proud moment for the Free State and for the Matlakeng community,” Lebohang stated.
Community elders were recognized for their vital contributions in sharing oral histories and traditional knowledge, which are now part of the museum’s digital archive. Attendees commented on the launch as both inspiring and educational, expressing hope that the museum would evolve into a valuable cultural and tourism resource for the region.
The Matlakeng Heritage Digital Museum marks a bold step toward ensuring that local stories, traditions, and historical experiences are digitally preserved and shared with future generations.
