While his peers engage in soccer or loiter the streets after school and on weekends, 14-year-old Sello Junior Ntlororo is busy honing his skills in fixing generators and lawnmowers, a talent he is learning from his father.
Sello, a Grade 9 learner at Retsamaile Combined School in Botshabelo, began fixing generators in 2022. His father, Kabelo Ntlororo, opened a small generator repair workshop called the Generator King in 2020. Sello’s curiosity prompted his father to teach him the ins and outs of generator repair, and he quickly took to the craft.
Now affectionately known as the “Generator King Junior,” Sello has developed the ability to perform basic repairs on generators and lawnmowers. During the weekdays, he focuses on his studies, but he eagerly joins his father every Saturday to work in the workshop.
Kabelo Ntlororo emphasizes the importance of education, ensuring that Sello prioritizes his schoolwork before diving into his passion for repairs. “I want him to succeed in both his studies and his interests,” Kabelo says.
Sello dreams of becoming a Mechanical Engineer and has a particular fondness for fixing petrol-run generators. Depending on the complexity of the issue and the parts required, he can spend anywhere from 2 to 5 hours repairing a generator.
“I am very proud of Sello, and I will do my best to help him attain his dream of being a mechanical engineer,” Kabelo expressed with pride.
