The community of Kroonstad, alongside colleagues, friends, and heartbroken listeners, gathered in their numbers to bid a final, deeply dignified farewell to the legendary voice, Ramatsoso Mokebe.
Ntate Mokebe was laid to rest on Saturday, 18 July. He was a true giant of the airwaves who garnered a loyal following, from Lesedi FM to Free State FM. Listening to Mokebe was nourishing and soothing; he was truly a talent behind the mic.
The overwhelming turnout was a beautiful, living testament to the lives he touched, the stories he championed, and the massive void his passing leaves in the broadcasting world.
For years, South Africans woke up to and engaged with his masterful broadcasting style. His remarkable collaboration with Palesa Chubisi at Lesedi FM remains etched in radio history. Together, they formed an elite team—delivering current affairs, breaking stories, and community-driven dialogue with unmatched professionalism, precision, and respect for the listener.
A pioneer in the digital space, Ramatsoso seamlessly bridged the gap between traditional broadcasting and the new era by bringing his immense wealth of experience to Free State FM Digital Radio, one of the first online radio stations in the Free State.
His compelling, deep-dive interviews on the digital airwaves showcased that, no matter the platform, his dedication to uncovering truth and uplifting the community never wavered.
Free State FM CEO and founder, Patrick Tsolo, said seeing the community and the media fraternity come together in such vast numbers in Kroonstad proves that Ntate Mokebe was more than just a broadcaster—he was a trusted companion in millions of homes. The atmosphere of dignity, reverence, and profound love at his funeral perfectly mirrored the way he carried himself throughout his life and career.
“A great broadcaster never truly goes silent; their voice remains an echo in the hearts of the listeners they served,” Tsolo remarked.
