The 8th Anniversary of the Bethlehem to Clarens Fun Walk and Run Marathon was celebrated in spectacular fashion on Sunday, 26 July 2026, as more than 600 participants, together with sponsors, partners, government representatives, volunteers and community members, gathered for another successful edition of one of the Free State’s fastest-growing community sporting events.
Participants embarked on the scenic 37-kilometre route, starting at Wimpy in Bethlehem and finishing at the Welcome to Clarens Town Entrance Signage, where they were welcomed by enthusiastic supporters after completing the challenging journey through the picturesque eastern Free State.
The event once again demonstrated the transformative power of sport in promoting healthy lifestyles, strengthening social cohesion, encouraging active living, boosting tourism and contributing to local economic development. Participants travelled from various towns and provinces, reinforcing the marathon’s growing reputation as a premier community sporting event in South Africa.
Although 2026 marks nine years since the marathon was established in 2017, this year’s event proudly celebrated its 8th Anniversary. The marathon was not held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the national restrictions on public gatherings, making this year’s edition a significant milestone in its remarkable journey.
What started with only two or three participants has steadily grown into a vibrant community event attracting hundreds of runners and walkers annually. The 2026 edition welcomed more than 600 participants, highlighting the continued growth and popularity of the marathon.
Speaking on behalf of the Organising Committee, Communications and Media representative Lekgutsa Mbele reflected on the remarkable journey of the event.
“The Bethlehem to Clarens Fun Walk and Run Marathon has evolved into far more than a sporting event. It has become a platform that promotes healthy living, youth development, tourism, community unity and economic growth. From only two or three participants in our early years to more than 600 participants today, this journey reflects determination, resilience and the unwavering support of our communities and partners.”
Mbele highlighted the significant contribution the marathon continues to make to the regional economy.
Visitors travelling from outside the region increased demand for accommodation, restaurants, retail businesses and transport services throughout Bethlehem and Clarens. Local guesthouses, hotels, hospitality establishments and tourism operators benefited from the influx of participants and supporters.
The event also created temporary employment opportunities for young people who served as marshals, registration officials and event support personnel responsible for participant safety and operational logistics.
In Clarens, township tourism initiatives, restaurants, craft markets, local businesses and taxi operators also experienced increased economic activity as participants and supporters explored the town following the marathon.
The Chairperson of the Bethlehem to Clarens Fun Walk and Run Marathon, Lefa Sechele, described the success of the event as both emotional and inspiring.

What began as a humble vision with just two people has grown into a remarkable community event that now inspires hundreds of participants and reaches thousands more through our partners, supporters, volunteers, spectators and the media.”
