Gwijo groups continue to entertain communities with their improvised acapella versions.
Gwijo The Legacy, a Gwijo group based in Botshabelo in the Free State, is cementing its name as one of the upcoming Gwijo groups to look out for. Their infectious talent has earned them a substantial following and dedicated fans.
Known for their powerful and soulful interpretations of traditional Sesotho and Xhosa chants, they blend rhythm, storytelling, and unity in their performances.
Formed by a group of passionate young artists, Gwijo The Legacy aims to revive and modernize cultural music, using their voices to celebrate African identity and inspire a deeper appreciation for heritage among the youth.
Their performances are marked by rich harmonies, energetic delivery, and messages that resonate with communities across South Africa.
“Whether on stage at local events or sharing their craft online, Gwijo The Legacy is fast becoming a symbol of cultural pride and creative excellence. With a growing following and an unwavering commitment to their roots, the group is not only preserving tradition but shaping a new legacy for future generations,” said the group.
The 14-member group was formed in January 2025 by Thabang Sebetoane, the Chairman, and Vuyisile Salman, the Vice Chairman.
Both Thabang and Vuyisile started the Gwijo group in Botshabelo out of a deep passion for cultural preservation and community empowerment. Recognizing the renewed interest in traditional music like Gwijo among the youth, they felt a strong need to modernize it to resonate with this generation.
The group consists mainly of secondary school students from various schools across Botshabelo.
Mosala Mafa, the group leader, is responsible for practice sessions and ensuring the group rehearses in preparation for performances and other events.
The group practices twice a week on Fridays and Sundays at Kaizer Sebothelo Stadium.
