Mmabana Cultural Centre recently celebrated Heritage Day in grand fashion, highlighting the talent, culture, and services offered by this vibrant institution during its Heritage Month Activation Celebration.
The theatre was filled with an enthusiastic crowd, enjoying entertainment, speeches, and a showcase of the diverse offerings available for young people, children, and adults alike. The celebration set the stage for the provincial Heritage Day event held on Saturday, September 26, in Qwaqwa, under the sub-theme: “Celebrating Our Living Heritage: Strengthening the Ties That Bind Us.”
Mirriam Moffat, manager of the Mmabana Cultural Centre, articulated that the purpose of the Heritage Month Activation Celebration was to reposition the cultural centre as a dynamic and inclusive heritage institution. It not only seeks to preserve the past but also to actively shape the future.
Aligned with the 2026 national theme, the activation aims to extend beyond mere preservation. It envisions reimagining how to safeguard, present, and transmit living heritage to future generations within an evolving society.
The celebration also focused on the following key objectives:
- Reimagine the Heritage Institution: To showcase Mmabana Cultural Centre as a modern heritage hub — a living institution for learning, creativity, dialogue, and community healing, rather than just a physical space.
- Celebrate Living Heritage: To honor both tangible and intangible heritage, which includes indigenous languages, oral history, traditional attire, music, dance, traditional food, and indigenous knowledge systems.
- Promote Intergenerational Transmission: To create a dialogue platform between elders, the custodians of heritage, and youth, the inheritors, ensuring that indigenous knowledge is preserved for future generations.
“At the end of the activation, Mmabana Cultural Centre will have affirmed its role as a community-based heritage institution that is responsive to the new era — inclusive, educational, and community-owned,” Moffat concluded
