In November 2024, the small community of Makeleketla in Winburg, Free State, was shaken by the tragic death of three-year-old Lethabo Litabe. The toddler was reported missing after going to play with neighbors and never returned home.

A day later, his lifeless body was discovered wrapped in a black plastic bag in the yard of a local resident. This heartbreaking discovery left the community in shock and mourning, with many demanding swift justice for Lethabo.

In response to the tragedy, the local non-governmental organization, Ke Mjita I’m a BOY, organized gatherings to call for justice for Lethabo. This organization, known for its advocacy against gender-based violence and child abuse, led community members through the streets of Winburg, urging law enforcement agencies to take accountability and action.

Participants carried placards with messages such as “Justice for Lethabo” and “Protect Our Children.”

During the gathering, speakers emphasized the need for community vigilance and the importance of creating safe environments for children. They also called on the South African Police Service to expedite their investigation and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

Thabang Lereko from the organization stated that no arrests have been made in connection with Lethabo’s death, and the Free State police have urged anyone with information to come forward, highlighting the critical role the community plays in aiding the investigation.
