The Central University of Technology (CUT) in Free State has condemned the murder of its student, 19-year-old Bunono Alulutho Buba, who was brutally killed in Colesberg, Northern Cape, on June 5. Buba was studying for a Bachelor of Education (SPFET) in ECO Management.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has opened a murder investigation following the discovery of Buba’s body in the veld between Bongweni and Khayelitsha in Kuyasa. Preliminary reports indicate that on June 5, at approximately 2:25 AM, police received a report of an alleged attack at a drinking establishment in Khayelitsha, Colesberg.
Upon arrival at the location, officers found no one there and proceeded to the Manne Dipico Hospital to check if anyone was receiving medical treatment. While at the hospital, a man arrived in a Volkswagen Golf and reported that his girlfriend was lying in the veld between Bongweni and Khayelitsha.
When police arrived at the scene, they discovered the body of a female victim with stab wounds to her neck and abdomen. The police detained the boyfriend after he was identified with the belongings of the deceased.
Dr. Bernard Sebake, CUT’s Dean of Students, expressed his regret about the ongoing issues of Gender-Based Violence and Femicide, which continue to harm humanity and threaten the lives of women.
“This epidemic leaves society, families, and friends broken and traumatized, as the loss of one life is a loss to the entire nation. We urge our students and staff to keep the family of the deceased student in their prayers during these difficult times. We also encourage our students, staff, and the community in Colesberg to have faith in law enforcement and to cooperate in ensuring that Ms. Buba and her family receive the justice they need,” said Dr. Sebake.
The police are urging anyone with information that may assist in the investigation to contact the investigating officer, Constable Gorra, at 074 378 8229.
