Aphunyezwe Cyndralesta Soqaka, known by her radio name LesBaby, has always dreamed of being behind the microphone and connecting with listeners. She hosts the Sunday Chill show on Kgolagano FM from 12:00 to 15:00.
LesBaby explains that although she didn’t grow up listening to the radio or showing an interest in it, her desire to enter the media space grew as she got older. Meeting Boitumelo Tshabalala provided her with the opportunity to be on air and join Kgolagano FM.
“When I met Boitumelo at the waterfront mall, I jokingly said I wanted to work in radio and showcase what I consider my talent. She then sent me the audition forms and encouraged me to give it a try. Honestly, as scared as I was, I did exactly that. Now I work at the radio station, and I’ve loved it ever since. I’ve been there for a year and a few months now,” LesBaby explains.
She loves the influence that radio has in shaping listeners’ mindsets about various topics discussed on air, leaving it up to them to consider the advice shared.
LesBaby believes radio is very informative and admits she never thought she would listen to the medium, let alone work at a radio station.
On her show, she plays Soul and R&B music and interacts with listeners, discussing topics like love and betrayal.
“Even though my show is on Sundays, as a radio host, you can’t just play music all day. You must engage with the community by discussing their views and opinions. That’s how you connect with people on the other side of the line,” said LesBaby.
To prepare for her show, she considers her audience and ensures they are included in her show’s script.
LesBaby respects her listeners, referring to them as her family. Speaking to them gives her peace of mind, and she is excited to know that her words on the show can change lives.
