Mmamahabane in Ventersburg, Free State, might be a small town, but it has produced notable figures like the SAFTA-winning actor Khotso Nkatho and Itumeleng “Sputniki” Maruping. Among its talented creatives based in the town is Lyson Mafuta (40), who is capturing attention with his unique artistry.
Mafuta has a talent for transforming cans and bottle caps into an array of items including jackets, bags, windmills, caps, chairs, baskets, and even cars. His innovative creations continue to mesmerize visitors passing through Ventersburg on their journeys.
As the owner of CRC Wireworks, Mafuta is also skilled in crafting wire and metal sculptures. For him, working with recyclable materials is more than just a hobby—it’s a passion that allows him to turn his creativity into income.
He operates a stall opposite the Astron filling station in Ventersburg where he sells his work. Originally from Zimbabwe, Mafuta cites his late brother as his inspiration for pursuing art. After his brother’s passing, he dedicated himself to creating art independently, often looking to the internet for new ideas and techniques.
One of his standout pieces—a jacket, cap, necklace, and bag made entirely from cans—was crafted six months ago following a customer’s request. Mafuta shared, “It took me two full months to complete the jacket, chain, cap, and bag. The jacket alone was made from 396 cans, along with wire, while the bag used 218 cans.”
He emphasizes that all his products are created using recycled materials. The jacket, cap, and bag often attract attention, with people stopping to take pictures out of curiosity and admiration for his work.
