In a powerful celebration of bravery, heritage, and youth empowerment, the Matla Tourism Youth Organization from Zastron in the Free State hosted a moving Commemoration Day in honour of Lucas Majozi, South Africa’s decorated World War II hero.

The celebration took place on Wednesday, October 1, at Mooifontein Primary School in Zastron. The event brought together veterans, community leaders, young creatives, and residents of the Zastron township to reflect on Majozi’s legacy and the broader contributions of South African soldiers to global history.

Lucas Majozi, remembered as the first Black South African to be awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for bravery under fire, was honoured through powerful speeches, curated exhibitions, and vibrant performances.

The day opened with a welcome address by Jade Leholo, who emphasized the importance of preserving national history and passing it on to the youth. Keynote speaker Nicolas Itumeleng Seathlolo delivered a heartfelt tribute to Majozi, highlighting his selflessness during the Battle of El Alamein and the courage it takes to serve a nation amid adversity.

Thabang Matlole, Xhariep District Led Manager, also spoke, sharing lesser-known insights into Majozi’s life and underlining the importance of education in understanding our country’s heroes.

A highlight of the commemoration was the specially curated local arts and small business exhibition, featuring rare photographs, military memorabilia, and historical narratives detailing Majozi’s heroism. The exhibition not only educated attendees but also inspired the youth, many of whom engaged deeply with the material. One attendee remarked, “It was emotional and eye-opening. I didn’t know we had such heroes who looked like me.”

To blend remembrance with cultural celebration, the event also hosted a Dance Competition, showcasing dynamic talent and creative expression from local youth. Dance groups competed with passion, skill, and energy, making the occasion both a tribute and a celebration of cultural pride.
