In the heart of the Free State, Kroonstad, where dusty streets breed dreamers, Teboho Reginald Selelane is proving that township grit can light up national screens.
Selelane’s path to being in the entertainment space traces back to the early 2000s, staging cheeky sketches at school before diving into Thusanang Theatre Productions in 2009. There, Tswana dance and theatre ignited his fire, with the late Mbongeni Ngema as his north star.
“His blend of storytelling, music, and social commentary showed me how powerful theatre could be,” he recalls.
That spark propelled him into TV production, landing a producer gig at 1FSTV (now Phuthuloha TV) in 2021.
At the core of his buzzworthy run is Youth on the Move, a high-octane magazine show spotlighting young innovators, artists, and activists.
“We mixed on-the-ground reporting with high-energy studio segments, giving a platform to voices that are often overlooked,” he explains. However he faced multiple challenges like razor-thin budgets, load-shedding blackouts, and improvised shoots in unconventional spots. Yet, Selelane flipped them into a raw, authentic aesthetic that viewers love, powering through with battery rigs and community muscle.
He collaborated with Lebohang Pharoe on Youth on the Move before he ventured full-time into Sports. Stating that his charisma and deep connection to youth culture bring an authentic energy. To aspiring producers, his mantra is clear: “Start small, think big. Learn every role. Network relentlessly. Stay authentic as your unique voice is your biggest asset.”
Selelane fuses TV with music and film, layering amapiano beats over entrepreneur tales or choral heritage, and turning them into TikTok gold. Currently, he’s brewing Youth on the Move‘s new season and a Street Legends pilot on Free State township heroes.
