Following the successful tenure of Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane, which concluded on January 31, 2026, the National Commissioner of Police, General Fannie Masemola, visited the Free State to announce the appointment of the incoming Provincial Commissioner.
Accompanied by Premier Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae, MEC for Community Safety and Transport Mr. Jabu Mbalula, and Acting Divisional Head of Crime Detection Major General Mogale, General Masemola addressed the community’s long-awaited anticipation for this appointment.
In her welcoming remarks, Premier Letsoha-Mathae emphasized the necessity for the people of the Free State to both see and feel safe within their province. She stressed the importance of the incoming Commissioner having a deep understanding of the community’s challenges.
National Commissioner Masemola recognized Major General Apaphia Modise for his commendable service as Acting Commissioner during the transition, before announcing the promotion of Lieutenant General Thabang Solly Lesia as the new Provincial Commissioner of the Free State.
General Masemola highlighted Lt. Gen. Lesia’s extensive experience in both the Detective Service and Visible Policing (VISPOL), along with his B Tech in Policing. He urged the SAPS officers to maintain pride and diligence in their service to the community.
Premier Letsoha-Mathae welcomed Lt. Gen. Lesia’s appointment, noting his local roots in the Free State, which equip him with a unique understanding of the province’s specific criminal challenges.
In his acceptance speech, Lt. Gen. Lesia expressed gratitude for the trust bestowed upon him. He reiterated his commitment to being a servant of the people, ensuring quality service from his team. His focus areas will include:
- Eradication of drugs in troubled communities.
- Upholding professional police conduct.
- Prioritizing the fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
- Targeting organized crime syndicates.
As he steps into this pivotal role, Lt. Gen. Lesia aims to enhance the safety and security of the Free State community.
