While many people shy away from collecting what they view as rubbish or litter, Bonamile Michael Mosetlhe from Bloemfontein in the Free State is thriving as a recycler. He sees potential where others see waste, turning discarded items into cash.
Bonamile collects cans, plastic bottles, and glass, which he then sells for a profit. Over a two-month period, he can make between R4000 and R5000. His journey into recycling began when he noticed empty bottles—both plastic and glass—while commuting to work on the bus. As the company he was employed by faced closure, he recognized recycling as a viable opportunity to make a living.

He sells his collected materials to scrap metal companies, amassing tons of bottles, cans, and plastic. To enhance his collection process, he often uses his family car to transport the waste he gathers.
However, Bonamile faces challenges in his line of work, such as a lack of resources, permanent workspace, and stiff competition.

“What I love about being a recycler is that waste is everywhere in our community and town. I see myself as the owner of a sustainable registered company that will create jobs. I have learned so much about waste recycling, including how to sort items that yield better profits. I have already registered with the CIPC to gain recognition and access to assistance and funding,” he shared.

Through his efforts, Bonamile demonstrates how turning trash into treasure can be both environmentally and financially rewarding.
